Ramen Chmait, MD, is the Director of Fetal Therapy and Minimally Invasive Fetal Surgery at the Institute for Maternal-Fetal Health (IMFH) at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Ramen Chmait received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. He completed his Internship and Residency at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, and Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of California, San Diego.
In 2004 Dr. Ramen Chmait moved to Tampa, Florida, where he trained in fetal surgery with Dr. Rubén Quintero. Over the course of the next two years, Dr. Ramen Chmait assisted Dr. Quintero in all fetal surgery cases, including the surgical management of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence, selective intrauterine growth restriction, iatrogenic rupture of fetal membranes/amniopatch, fetal lower urinary tract obstruction, amniotic band syndrome, thoracic masses such at congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation and pulmonary sequestration, fetal anemia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and select congenital heart diseases.
Dr. Chmait was recruited to the University of Southern California in 2006 to head the fetal surgery program at the IMFH. Since then there have been over 75 fetal surgery procedures performed per year, of which approximately two-thirds were for the operative fetoscopic treatment of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) via selective laser photocoagulation of communicating vessels.
