IMFH is fortunate to have an on-site Teratogen Counselor, part of the California Pregnancy Risk Information Service and Clinical Research program. This service is available to everyone, at no charge, accessible through a statewide toll-free number, by e-mail, or by meeting with our counselor in person.

The Teratogen information specialist can provide information for patients, physicians, or anyone with questions regarding possible effects on pregnancy, including planning for future pregnancy. Questions and concerns can include anything one has heard or read about effecting pregnancy, such as medications, illnesses, recreational drug use, and exposure to environmental agents.

Some commonly asked questions:

  1. How much folic acid should I be taking?
  2. Is it ok to dye my hair?
  3. I’m taking an antidepressant, should I stop?
  4. How much fish is ok to eat?
  5. Can I drink wine or beer with dinner?
  6. Will a drug I took before I knew I was pregnant hurt my baby?
  7. Is it ok to get a flu shot?

This service is confidential and free. Bilingual Spanish-speaking counselors are available. There may be an opportunity to help future pregnant women, by participating in the Patient Follow-Up Program. Participants receive a free specialized pediatric physical exam for their baby, among other services.
